We run a booth at both the Durham and Carrboro Farmers Markets, educating marketgoers about the many ways that the Jewish State of Israel makes the world a better place for all. We’re grateful for the educational materials and attractive souvenirs supplied by StandWithUs. Durham and Carrboro both have diverse populations, that are reflected in the crowds attracted to our booth. In the two years we’ve run the booth, we’ve had thoughtful conversations with people from across the United States, India, China, various African countries, Middle Eastern countries, and many European nations. What the people have in common is an interest in learning more about Israel. We talk about Israeli breakthroughs in water and homeland safety technology, their internationally renowned disaster rescue teams, and their diverse population, among the topics. In many cases, customers take brochures for their children too.
Of course, at times we have also attracted anti-Israel people. We try to engage them in conversation when possible, but they often want to just vent their negative feelings about Israel, while ignoring “inconvenient” facts. On several occasions we broke through the barriers simply by asking some gentle questions, and took a conversation that started off with negative vibes and ended it as a positive experience for both parties.
